The current volume, The Crystal Ball, was first published in 1916 at the end of World War I. It is a collection of short stories that can best be described as ‘weird fiction’. There are also at least three different versions of this book and the one I have translated from contains the most stories. While varied, each story is rich in emotional honesty, both hopeful and painful. Almost every story stirs my own memories in a way that somehow makes them more relatable. The stories include: Meersburg; Ammerland; The Sharp Corner; Ali Tschisgosades Christmas Tree; The Transformation of Maria; The Pit; The Mouse; The Man; The Phenomenon; The Last Wishes; The Strong Man; A Judgement of God; Anatomy; The Merchant of Venice; Aunt Resa; The Gramophone; The Boss; Hunzadics; The Daughter of Isaac Blevy
