Stanislaw Przybyszewski was one of the two greatest influences on German Author Hanns Heinz Ewers. Ewers wrote a letter to him addressing him as worthy master.
About Stanislaw Przybyszewski
Stanislaw Przybyszewski, Polish writer, poet, dramatist and essayist was born on 7 May 1868 and died 23
November 1927 when Poland was a part of Prussia. In 1889 he went to Berlin to study architecture and
medicine where he became close friends with a circle of writers including Edward Munch, Richard
Dehmel, August Strindberg, and others.
In 1893 he married the Norwegian writer, Dagny Juel. He abandoned her in 1893 and began living in Norway with Jadwiga Gasowska., wife of poet and playwright Jan Kasprowicz and lived mostly in Norway for a few years until moving back to Poland. He lived in Warsaw from 1901-1905 and occupied himself with writing projects. In April of 1905 after her divorce was finalized the couple was married. He then moved to Munich from 1906 to 1918, returned once more to Poland in 1919 and became very involved in civil service work after World War 1 and became very involved with the re-emergence of Poland as an independent nation. He struggled with alcoholism for the rest of his life. He was the author of many
publications and a highly successful public speaker. His funeral procession headed by a four horse carriage with state insignia was 3/4 miles long and included State and Church dignitaries, chancellors of colleges and universities, writers and journalists. His most widely known works include “Homo Sapiens” (1895) and “Satan’s Kinder” (1897). Very little of his work has ever been translated into the English language and even that is not readily available today. Favorite themes included the “naked soul” free of social constraints whose destructive and self-destructive energies were also the evolutionary forces that drove the individual toward perfection. His works of fiction have simple themes but integrate the turmoil and struggle of the main characters on a deeply personal level.

De Profundis is the first of five novellas in “The Pentateuch” written by Polish author Stanislaw Przybyszewski. These novellas were never published in one book but published individually. “De Profundis” is the first in that series. The other four are: “Vigilien”, “Epipsychidion”, “Androgyne” and “Totenmasse”. This was first published in 1895 and now translated into English by Joe E. Bandel. This book is available as a small hardcover.
“Androgyne” was first published in 1900 and is one of the five novellas known as “The Pentateuch”. They are “De Profundis”; “Androgyne”; “Vigilien”; “Epipsychidion” and “Requiem Aeternam”. This little story is simply one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read and I hope to share it with others! Translation by Joe E Bandel. Requiem Aeternam explores both life and death in their horror and their beauty. This is truly a beautiful book and one of the Pentateuch by Stanislaw Przybyszewski.

This beautiful short story by Stanislaw Przybyszewski is very haunting and speaks of eternal love and soulmates and the eternal torment of trying to find each other.
Night over the sea! The deep darkens from the black clouds; two stars struggle through the night with pale light and spray glittering frost onto the sea. Red-hot rings of haze grow around two stars; they grow, clump into clouds, the stars go out and curl deep into the sky like volcanic craters.
A lurking silence hovers in the red haze of the sky; but already the craters are opening up and streams of fire shoot down into the water in a spraying rod vibration. For a moment the sea stands in towering flames, throwing its fiery arms fiercely up into the sky, the darkness flees in luminous swathes; but already the wonder dies away, the sky burns up, and on the darkness of the sea two pale stars twinkle like glittering frost.
It happened that night.
