Jugend and Simplicissimus were two of the most popular literary and art periodicals of their time and were highly competitive with each other. So I have been highly curious to compare the two. So far my favorite has been Simplicissimus but I want to give Jugend some time and see if it will grow on me as well. This issue kind of gets off on the wrong foot by singing the praises of Bismark and the War of 1870 of which I really have no interest. Stories include:

Master of All Arts by F.v.O.; The War of 1870 by Tanera; Farewell and Gone by Albert Matthael; Spring Wind by Lisbeth Lindemann; Dusk on the Lake by Hermann von Lingg; Before and After; After and Before by Paul Heyse; The Never-Embarrassed by Georg Botticher; The Brain of Our Dear Sisters by Georg Hirth (which is satire) This issue is free to download as an Epub or PDF file.

Leonhard Stein is one of Germany’s forgotten writers who disappeared shortly after World War I. His work has been compared to that of Hanns Heinz Ewers and Karl Hans Strobl and I am inclined to agree. He published three slim volumes: “The Ballet of Death”; “The Flute Player”; and “The Fire Lily”. In addition I”ve included a story from Vol 1, No. 6 of Der Orchideengarten.

The stories included in this collection are: The Electric Piano; Vampyre; The Ring; Hashish; Jaschke; The Mirror; Scherman; The Coat; Li; The Five Branched Candelabra; The Flute Player and The Fire Lily. These stories have been translated into English for the first time by Joe E. Bandel. This book is available as hardcover, paperback and epub.

The project I am currently working on is the collected works of Leonhard Stein who is considered by some to be as good as Hanns Heinz Ewers and Karl Hans Strobl. Unfortunately it seems he published three novellas and then disappeared never to be seen again! I have access to all three small books and have translated about half of The Fire Lilly a couple years ago but never finished it. Now I’m working on The Ballet of Death which is a slim volume of short stories. The final novella is The Flutist and I have no idea what to expect from it. My last Deadly Days – Tales of Dark Fantasy podcast included Vampyre which is one of the short stories in this collection. The entire collection should only be around 300 pages.

Bandel Books is moving through a growing phase so please bear with me as I try to sort things out! This is eventually going to be my new Book Store! It will list all of my publications and have links to books, Ezines, and podcasts. I am trying to repurpose this site and that brings some challenges. So this is the front page or main page where I will share recent projects and what I’m currently working on.

On the right and on the top you will see tabs or links to various authors and publications and the books I have translated. Each page will have more information and the links to any products.

As such this site is under construction so please be patient with me! Thank you so much!

“Hanns Heinz Ewers Brevier” was first published in 1922 in the German language as a sampler of Ewers thoughts, ideas and beliefs. It is a collection of excerpts taken from a wide variety of his writing and organized into the categories, Music, Art and the Artist,Love, Philosophical Observations, Religion, Peoples and Lands, Politics and Love of the Fatherland and a final section entitled In Person.

This small book gives important insight into the thoughts and beliefs of this very important and forgotten author. It has been translated into English for the first time by Joe E. Bandel. The contents of this brevier were selected by people that knew Hanns Heinz Ewers very well and were quite close to him. It is a very important book in terms of how his closest friends and associates saw him.

This is available from Lulu publishing as a Hardcover and epub version.

Vampire

The long awaited sequel to the “Frank Braun trilogy”. “Vampire” is the final book of the series written by German author Hanns Heinz Ewers, in an uncensored translation for the first time by Joe Bandel. The first two books in the series are “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Alraune”, also translated by Joe Bandel. The previous English language translation of this book was heavily censored and missing around 150 pages! It was also banned in the United States and allied countries presumably because it spoke of the “Steigler Afair” named after then Secretary of State Steigler before the United States officially entered World War I.

In the book Ewers speaks of hundreds if not thousands of German Americans including Jewish Americans that wanted to go to the “Fatherland” and help Kaiser Wilhelm fight the war. They bought passage on steamers headed for Germany and were instead sent directly to prisoner of war camps in France and England. This was before the United States officially entered the war.

This book is largely biographical and speaks of Frank Braun being trapped here in the United states because of the war raging in Europe. He reconnects with an old flame, Lotte Lewi, who is now a rich widow and begins to work as a German propagandist for the German cause in an effort to keep the United States out of the war in Europe. But he experiences strange attacks of weakness that leave him helpless. It slowly comes out that something is taking all his energy, but is Lotte the vampire or is it him!

This book is available from Lulu publishing as a hardcover, paperback and as a Kindle ebook.
